Do you realise

The Coro

is owned and run by SLDC

Our Town Hall

is owned and run by SLDC

(Grange own their Victoria Hall and charge SLDC rent if they use it)

Our toilets

are owned and run by SLDC

(at a cost of £300 / week)

Our Car Parks

are owned and run by SLDC

(Not true - we (The Town Lands Trust) own the Gill so why the hell do SLDC run it and fix the charge? And do you call what happens at Stockbridge Lane Car Park "being run" - "being left" perhaps)

Our Market - indoor

is owned and run by SLDC

Our Market - outdoor

is run by SLDC

(Settle run their own and thrive)

Our parks

are owned and run by SLDC

Do we own and run anything ourselves?

Hoad Monument?

One thing we do own and run ourselves are

The pottery decorations on Gill Banks,

The planters on Gill Banks

and the picnic tables there.

We're gradually taking over our Mill Dam Park

Our council is threatening to take back the planting of our flower beds to avoid Begonias,
Begonias, Begonias, Begonias

Now there's a start!

So let's go and celebrate the reopening of Hoad Monument.

Where do I find out about it?

The Town Council Web Site -

(great - now there's a splash - in amongst what was going to happen in . . . .2008)

The BBC web site

(Hooray they noticed!)

Years ago we had a fantastic box hedge at the side of the coro that said Ulverston now it looks like scrubland perhaps we could use it as a quiz for visitors to guess what it says !
Take a pic geoff

Will do.

Anyone for taking it over - I'll help and provide the plants from Chiltern Seeds plus my greenhouse.

Regarding the GILL.
What we really need there is a pleasant park with flower borders and plenty of seating. Not sure if there is room but a small play area for young children too.. The essential thing is to have somewhere for visitors (and residents of Ulverston) to sit and relax, eat their sandwiches and socialise (and maybe have the band play there occasionally? I know there is a park in Ulverston and a pleasant canal but it is the other side of the main road and unknown to visitors and quite a few locals.
CARS should be directed to the largely unused park on Stockbridge Lane. The Gill is too much of an Ulverston asset to be a park for cars to rest in!

When we visit places while on holiday, the first thing we look for in a town is a decent park. We are often rewarded by little paradises close to the centre.. Somewhere to rest after walking around. And the Gill has the benefit of a lovely walk under trees and by a running brook. If part of the field at the top could be acquired and transformed into a grassy play area for bigger children as well as tiny tots all the better for families.
Folk don't always want to be stuck in cafes and pubs in order to get a rest.

This is a serious consideration which should be possible without large sums of money involved.

By the way, it is great that those who made the pot troughs have gone to the trouble of planting lovely flowers. Much appreciated.

Don't understand, Is this supposed to be a bad thing? Not everyone has the time to take charge, we are not well off and need to work. The council does owe us these things. they are accountable and responsible

It is bad because Ulverstonians have lost control and they wish they hadn't.

Kendal and SLDC are regularly being blamed for doing things we don't like.

Which Council are you referring to?

I would like our Town Council to be in charge which involves taking responsibility - something it appears to shy away from at every opportunity.
