If you arrive at The Gill Car Park, you're in for a treat.
First is the centrepiece display of the new flags shown below
These were featured on the front page of the Evening Mail yesterday with a great picture - the Westmoreland Gazette's photographer comes tomorrow.
Here are a couple of them:
This artistic talent is really resetting the bar at a high standard for the art design in the town.

Great to see.
Well done to all who help with this event.
FLY THE FLAG
JAK
It's just a shame that within half an hour the flags are wrapped around the poles and cannot be seen, this seems to be happening all over town, a quick search on the internet reveals numerous options to prevent this from happening.
such a shame because otherwise they woudld look great
It sad that you don't feel that you can identify yourself so that we can have a chat about this.
What's the problem?
I'd appreciate hearing your ideas.
yes years ago ladies stockings used to twist.
Each flag has its own eco system and I do know that you Geoff have taken this on board.

Flags, for me, are like cats - they like their freedom.
I'm not at all sure that they like these rods that have become part of their design.
This year I'm experimenting in taking them out and allowing each flag its freedom.
It lovely to watch something that is free to move in the wind.
Worth a little coaxing when they get themselves in a twist because of too much excitement!
The simple option is to find two rings that fit loosely over the pole and secure them either side in the desired position but not to tightly so the ring may spin freely, obviously as the poles seem to be varying sizes along the length some different size rings may be needed, once in position secure the flag to the ring with something resembling or similar to a curtain hook (basically as long as it will not come off), hey presto the flag will just blow around the pole on the rings and no more tangled flag.
As for identifying myself I don't have a google ID etc, and am still a little worried about the whole internet privacy issue.
Kind regards
It sounds easy but in practice I don't find it works.
The main problem is to enable the top end of the flag to turn.
If the flag is the conventional rectangular shape then the torque at the top will be enough to turn it on its pole. However with our flags we have a very narrow top (coming to a point).
Remember also that we are dealing with a thrust bearing - one that caries the weight of the flag - we have tried using smooth bamboo inside bamboo.
Quite honestly I haven't the time for this fascinating research project and would happily work with you on ideas.
Today I freed up three flags by taking their rods out . . .
Re your anonymity, I don't understand why you can't talk to me directly with your ideas - you must know where to find me.
One must keep one's I/D secret.
ZORO
Woowee - Are we going to have a real exciting sword fight up some back alley.
Will they jump over walls and over dogs - and cats and get chased.
Will they find themselves on a roof overlooking the Gill - I know the way up!
Now that would be different Zoro vs. Gill Resident fighting it out on the roof skyline. I can hear the clash of their sabres now (have I got the right weapon? Doesn't sound right)
Good coverage in the Evening Mail. Front page on Monday with a great photo of excited youngsters enjoy our new "Spirit of Spring" 'collection' - with flags whistling all around them caressing their faces. Then on page 13 where I am quoted as saying that "The Coronation Hall could do with a bit more jazzing up"
What do you think?
Shall we make an effort for next year so that we have the ground level collect in both The Gill and The Coro.?
Both lots will need taking in every night ( and putting out early in the morning: not an onerous task.
Anyone wish to get involved with their design?
Then we'd also like to get some up at ground level at The Parade on Central Drive, Croftlands - an idea that was heavily questioned by the Neighbourhood Forum even though many residents thought it a great idea.
We need people to get involved at all levels for this to happen.
Fancy some flags anyone?
.
Rapier.
I will save the gill from the flagman.
Hi ho silver away.

Yes I did think Rapier - honest- but hadn't the courage of my convictions. Sabres are for galloping horses aren't they.
Now there's a thought - let's all jump on horses with our sabres and charge around The Gill chasing . . . . . flags or shitty dogs or we could encourage a charge on the council offices at Kendal.
I love those scenes in cowboys and indians films where there's a round up of charging horses and the numbers start at three and quickly mount up to fifty with clouds of dust and the thunder of hooves. Now change the scene to the Crimea and they can be the charge of the life brigade with the sabres drawn - but then this can change to the streets of Kendal as we demand free car parks.
Sounds like a dream sequence - perhaps it is and I'll wake up - having been thrown in the beck/bath.
Shall I go and do something 'useful' like the washing up . . . better still . . . play my clarinet - or the piano. . . ? ?
I guess peter winston got nothing to do with this,if your on facebook check Robbies Ices page out.
He serves our town selling Ice Cream all year round and Peter Winston as overlooked him on carnival day and elected a ice cream firm from Yorkshire to come over.
This is a disgrace why give business to outsiders??
