This may or may not be good for the town.
Tesco do not come with the best of reputations. . .
Here local people are concerned about the loss of business to small shops.
On the other hand a large store in the town centre will attract shoppers that would otherwise go to Barrow.
Small shops can then offer specialised and personal service.
Some feel that the local shopkeepers are unimaginative with their opening hours.
Tesco prices are not favourable.
Small shops can often be cheaper with good friendly service included - something the uncaring, low paid and ignorant staff of large stores can't compete with.
Compare Smith and Harrisons with Homebase and B & Q in Barrow - there is no question which to use!
Our big problem is parking in Ulverston something our Town Council should be tackling and is avoiding.
Access for Tesco will be the main problem which is why there was such an energetic opposition elsewhere.

Farmers are concerned about their practices.
Tesco can be a ruthless organisation and if I remember correctly avoid paying tax on their profits with an offshore fiddle.
We shall be researching their likely movements in Ulverston and report back.

It's about time we got a big named store in the town,at least it means we don't have to pay daft prices at booths.If the council pulled there fingers out there arse we could've had someone like primark here which would've pulled in the punters to town.But yet again they fail the town,o well at least i don't have to travel to barrow for my shopping now
At last a shop that has some use for the long suffering populace of this town. I t can't open quick enough for me. As for the local "rip off" traders I hope it hurts them until their pips squeak!
2 or 3 big shops in the town is all we need. I think the internet is the way forward for shopping. Small town centre shops do not have a future.

Personally, I try hard not to ever buy anything from Tesco.
I always will try to buy elsewhere unless the object is unavailable anywhere else.
As we have no way of influencing who comes here if they don't require planning permission then I have no choice.
Would I prefer another trader to take over - yes most likely.
As I believe it is true that they avoid paying tax then they are at an unfair advantage over other traders. I would hope that people would support owners they know and can give reliable service rather than faceless companies whose motivation is solely profit.
At the same time I realise others don't share my views . . .
