Mob rule

The lynch mob mentality about Venables stoked up by the press and some mindless public is threatening to make our justice system an absolute shambles.

We need a clamp down on this insatiable witch hunt.

We're talking about the actions of some mindless ten year olds for God's sake; not malicious adults.

WE DO NOT HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW.

And for our own protection in the future we must let the matter drop

I'm not going to publish comments about the merits of this case as having a discussion is exactly what I believe we should NOT do.

I believe we have a very competent system dealing with this and we have no business discussing the case itself.

On the other hand we could discuss why people feel they have a right to know and influence others rather than let the courts go about doing their job well.

The more talking that goes on at the moment the damage will be done not only in this particular case but to the legal system itself.

Totally agree.

so why post about it if it's what we shouldn't do

I wish to discuss "trial by media" rather than the specific case.

Should we not leave the law and its support structure to deal with criminals?

Does the way this is being handled not threaten justice for each one of us?

Well you and Gladys just chat amomgst yourselves then. The reason people want to discuss a particular case is that justice has not been done . Time and again we get the impression that more is done for the criminals than for the victims. Courts doing their job well ? Are you serious ?

In truth Justice is never done!

Justice is a movable feast to suit the society that defines it.

In this country we have a pretty sophisticated system that has its set of rules.

As a result we all know to a large degree where we stand.

If we now start changing the rules because the media whips up a storm then I believe completely that we're sunk and we would be exposed to any whim of vocal mindless unthinking people.

It happened wholesale in Germany over the Jews.

More recently over pedophiles when innocent people were targeted by 'the mob'.

Stop and think.

Let's not go there.

We don't want whipped up emotions to rule but calm rational thought.

Nothing will be perfect but somethings get closer than others.

Lynching has always been a plague fought and opposed by rational people.

We're approaching the situation of a hysterical emotional crowd of people marching down the road with their cattle wagon, carrying your mother and father, brothers, sisters, friends or children to the Market Cross where a Guillotine is ready for action.

Let's stop calmly and take stock.

Justice is indeed a moveable feast. If a certain child killer had been sentenced to death neither he, his family, friends, lawyers, and a few assorted bloggers, Guardian readers, pseudo-intellectuals, social workers, trick cyclists and fellow murderers would have considered that to be justice. On the other hand the remaining 50 odd million of us would!

Then it's just as well we don't have a true democracy.

We need protecting from ourselves.

Those that stop and think will begin to understand what happened in Germany during the second world war.

Fortunately for my family we had some thinking Quakers around us who befriended us at the same time here. Being half French we were thought to be spies. Survival meant keeping a low profile and speaking English well - which we did.

With the problems ahead of us, we're heading for the same situation here in England (I have higher hopes for the others in the UK).

What is needed are more activities where people get together and discuss these issues in depth and examine the consequences of their beliefs, rather than making knee-jerk reactions.

What happened in Germany in WW2 and before bears not the slightest resemblance to our current situation nor is it ever likely to. You simply throw that remark about to give your "argument" some quasi-intellectual currency. It is totally irrelevant.

Really?

For Nazi, read BNP

For Jew read Moslem

For Gas Chamber read deportation.

For WW2 read terrorist threat which can come from anywhere, including some believe, anyone different from ourselves.

For much of the time we live lives of accusing others and not taking responsibility ourselves.

We are full of our rights but what about our responsibilities.

The problem is so often with others and not with ourselves.

Much of the time we want our cake and eat it.

We want equality and justice but are critical of "none-locals" and slag off the police.

What's a pseudo-intellectual?

I'm just trying to use my brain to think, analyse and reason things out.

What's a pseudo-intellectual? It is defined as "a person exhibiting intellectual pretensions that have no basis in sound scholarship."

Pseudo intellectualism is "characterised by fraudulent intellectualism."

So it appears from your latest words of wisdom that the BNP is using matters such as the Venables case to agitate the masses in order to win the election and then emulate the 3rd Reich by persecuting Muslims and deporting "undesirables."

Mmm. It seems that the deluded ravings of men with dodgy facial hair are not confined to Germany!

Wow.

Did I really say all that?

Or has someone hacked into my computer?

Got him - or is it a her - she, no he, was hiding under the bed!

Kicked them out seen last scurrying down Neville St.

Sanity returns.
