Links for Locals - Something to tell your friends about!

Not only have we a new web site for Ulverston,

We also have what we think is a comprehensive source of selected local information for you.

Try and find out about something and let us know whether you find it!

If you have some useful information to add then leave it as a comment either here or on this Links website designed specially for the job!

great to have a website that doesn't work, take it you've not tested it

Great to have your negative comments coming in - what else!

Yes tested thoroughly but then it's easily ruined!

Spotted this gaff very quickly!

It's easy to get two index files confused!

Anything else!

Not working for me as well, keeps warning me of unsafe popups.

The graphics are low resolution, and why have you built it using flash, whats wrong with html

Thanks for these more helpful comments!

We need to work together for this project to succeed.

Perhaps this is a time for some frank talking!

Many of the people who leave comments are from people who, in my view, are wingers (many don't get published!) - they like making out the problem is elsewhere - not with themselves.

They ignore peoples hard work and pick on a small defect (and before you attack me for the same thing - I am not professing to have finished a job, nor am I being paid for it).

So here are some (technical) answers!

This is a site in its very early stages - it is not the finished product. I prefer to work like this as it shows up problems which can be avoided in the future.

1.It sounds as though the problems are not with the website but at your end because you have not set your browsers to deal with Flash.

2. Nothing is said about the twenty odd pages done entirely in HTML starting at http:www.ulverstonuk.co.uk/links with what most people will find to be a wealth of useful information.

3. Why Flash? Because it can be fun and it was used to provide some entertainment on the mock up pages!!

Flash is used for the home page because it is something I know well and is far easier to use than HTML. This helped my own emotional need to 'get something done'. I need to achieve SOMETHING which I can then return to repeatedly to perfect!

I used to do a fair bit of HTML ten years ago and built this now disused site this way - http://www.eppingforest.co.uk

Now I am relearning HTML with my Dreamweaver software. I agree that in order for everyone to access the site and for the search engines to find and access it with their robots, this is the best option. My target is to have the main part of the site operating with HTML by Jan 1st,2009.

HTML is what we have used exclusively for the "Links for locals" pages at http://www.ulverstonuk.co.uk/links which you can access from the home page with the blue "Find out" button and you could help by leaving feedback on these extensive links.

Never-the-less I think there is a place for some Flash and this will be reserved for what is a little unusual and might be worth the effort to view. It will always be placed on the fringes of the site for those feeling adventurous! Get those browsers tuned up to date!

Came across you blog today for the 1st time and had a scan at your new site.

I'm a big coder in flash and the issues users have experienced are not at their end but with the way you're trying implement into flash what is simple to achieve in html. The only way visitors can navigate the site is to turn of their security settings which is a big no no.

If your site is in it's early stages then state it on the site, plaster a beta banner if need be, the problem you've currently got is visitors think it's a finished product and won't come back.

Thanks, this is really helpful.

And what brought you here in the first place?

Picking up users concerns is the reason this site is being launched in a low-key way.

I shall change the home page now to make it more obvious that it is done in Flash.

First, the title of this item is "Links for locals":

Why are we discussing Flash? This is done in HTML.

Second the previous entry here, on the new site states:

"It is very much in the early stages of its appearance. It will get better and better in the coming days as more work is done to improve it.

At the moment it has been done in Flash but in order to be user-friendly, it needs to be done in HTML.

This is the current task.

At least something has got started!"

So the issue of Flash is understood and made clear.

Lastly, if it is stated that the site is in Flash then visitors need to expect Flash and behave accordingly.

Sounds like PC users with Microsoft are experiencing the internet like having sex wearing thick rubber gloves. Live a little - buy a Mac next time!

Now - any comments on the Links pages!

Put a link to this site and return in a few days for the HTML version of the home page (which is not easy for me to do - anyone offering help?)

You don't take criticism very well do you Geoff? Every "Thanks! That's really helpful!" seems to be a veneer for an attack, implied or otherwise, on the reader's negativity. Across your posts, the sub-text running through the blog is that only you have a verve for life and a desire to improve things.

Problems are always at the users' end, 'your browser is rubbish', the questionnaire 'works fine' etc etc - rightly or wrongly it all paints you as arrogant and possessing a massive ego. Having never met you, this might not be the case, but it's how you come across.

I could express some positivity and tell you that your website 'really shows potential', that it will be useful to residents and tourists alike, but that would be a lie. I think the Americans call it 'blowing smoke up your ass'. However good and noble your intentions I think the execution leaves everything to be desired.

I'm not trying to offend you or be a damp squib with "whinging" or "nit-picking", it's a little of that "frank talking" you were after.

Do feel free not to publish this disagreeable comment if you want.

I leave others to agree or disagree!

I do appreciate criticism from others.

It gives me something to think about and size up whether it's valid or not.

Well, what a fuss being made by some very negative people.

I'm mostly behind Geoff.

I'm on Internet Explorer 6.0 and have absolutely no problems with the Flash - no pop up messages and find all the pages working perfectly.

It's obvious to me that this is a "mock up", done to indicate what will be here in the future, if the promisses are kept.

The criticism of some of the photos is valid and will hopefully be improved.

However no one has commented on the amazing collection of links to every conceivable group and part of the Internet to do with Ulverston - and this we are told is just a start.

Well done Geoff.

If this is the result of being "arrogant and having a massive ego" then I'm all for it!

I'd like to see the others doing something positive for a change!
How about suggesting a few links that have been missed?

If the "Links for Locals" is a sign of the quality to come then this site has a lot of potential and I think we should all get behind it and promote it.
