Dog Fouling in Ulverston

This issue again!

I hope people can strike the right balance. My view is that:

1. We should talk to all those we suspect of dog fouling even if that risks us making ourselves unpopular - this really helps.

2. If we don't like it, we should quietly and without fuss pick it up ourselves even though it has nothing to do with us.

3. Ford Park should be very careful about its policy as I suspect that over 95% of dogs using the park are very responsible and they have a great influence not only on other dog owners, but on the behaviour of other people such as young people who might be tempted to vandalise property as has happened in the past. Far from demonising dog owners they need to be encouraged to be members of Ford Park Community Association with a special low cost membership - Can we move to a wider community involvement rather that polarisation of one section against another.

4. This issue is one where added regulation is ineffective - what is needed is that all of us try to improve the situation by our personal behaviour towards the problem and to the people that cause the problem.

Can we look to the Town Council adopting a policy that promotes the above concepts?

Dog shit

One of our readers has drawn my attention to an article on the hazard of dog shit.

We all need to make a conserted effort to deal with this problem.

What we need is a conviction and then perhaps dog owners whao are careless would take notice.

This article shows why.

One problem is that we in Ulverston rarely (never?) have visits from the people in Kendal that are supposed to police this - however even then their visits could be fruitless.

Would printing this article off and distributing it help?

What action do you recommend, Cllr Hodgson, for dealing with the major problem up Gill Banks?

It's on your patch - do you check it regularly?

How do other councils deal with the problem?

Can we have some suggestions that might work?

Swarthmore Hall treat

We were up last weekend to enjoy a fantastic treat of the crocusses - see them in their past glory at the side , here. They have never looked better and their memory continues to inspire.

I wonder if they are still in full bloom - or is it too late?

The new ones at Ford Park have now been followed by a beautiful show of Daffodils.

Some very thoughtful planting last year by the volunteers there.

The Crocusses in the Gill Banks planters are just coming out. The Dark Blue Hyacinths are looking great. At the moment it's safe to venture here as a major clean up of dogshit has been carried out. Dog foulers watch out, the Gill residents are out to catch you and prosecute you !

Their patience is exhausted.

Who let the dogs out in Ford Park on Christmas Day

At last I've finished this promised celebration of great fun event!

This gathering - the first of its kind in Ulverston brought together dogs for frolic. Their human mates enjoyed themselves as well.

Doggy people are great to chat with and responsibly help keep this threatened park for everyday people.

They are the main users of this expanse of grass and keep it in prime condition (picking up litter and other people's dog shit) !

Why not join them one Saturday morning around 9.30 am at Ford Park for a romp?

Nothing formal : maybe see you there!

Encouraging trend in Gill Banks

The incidents of dog fouling have definitely gone down here as the local people 'take ownership' of this area.

I take this to mean that people here, quite sensibly, are not looking to others for help but have taken matters into their own hands to keep this attractive area that way.

For several weeks now this area has been a joy to walk in!

Dog shit seems to make the news these days!

Well, for the second week running there is none to be found on any of the paths beside Gill Banks.

No politicians in view or yellow jacketted cops in view, just local people taking the upper hand. So beware, if you bring your dog up there - you are being watched!

The pigeon messages are just flying around the second discarded faeces are spotted. They can be pretty good shots themselves as anyone visiting Walney Island will know. (Gulls? - a bit of artistic licence )

Gill Banks

Is now a dog shit and litter free zone - enjoy!

A celebration of Spring

Whilst our world is full of gloom and doom, some nations manage to enjoy themselves.

It's very important to see the positives and enjoy a bit of fun with the simple things in life. Here both men and women play with coloured chalk - totally harmless and costing next to nothing.

Don't you wish that sometimes we didn't take life so seriously?

How about a festival of colour, here in Ulverston?

Pictures from Reuters - while they last!

Beats our preoccupation with dog shit, any day!

Town Mess Clear Up

Congratulations to Andrew, as reported in the Evening Mail, for having the energy to campaign about dog mess. It's great to have people in our town who will get up and actually do something rather than just moan.

However Cllrs Brenda Marr and Colin Hodgson will know that their statements are just hot air and will achieve absolutely nothing.

It's no use relying on SLDC to catch the bad dog owners (and they are very much in the minority - a few dogs can create a lot of mess). The officers go around in bright yellow jackets and can be seen a mile off!

What will change things in my view are two things:

Speak out ourselves whenever we see someone leaving a mess - hand them a bag and ask them to pick it up if necessary. Second - not so pleasant - pick it up ourselves.

As someone who enjoys walking other people's dogs, I regularly do both! If I'm picking up my mess, then I pick someone else's at the same time.

If Brenda and Colin are really genuine then let them join me on a Town Mess Clear Up. I'll give £100 to charity of their choice if they do - and they can wear bright yellow coats so that everyone will notice them (as they did in Kendal) if they please!

Lets see our Councillors be seen to DO SOMETHING !

The only one who I imagine would take up such a challenge would be Cllr Colin Williams - he knows how to get his hands dirty when necessary.

How about it Cllr Col ?

That would impress me - not hot air coming out of ineffective poodles - but fire coming out of dragons that bite.
