Something for everyone - Dalton Leisure Centre

The people of Dalton have, for a long time, been working together to achieve facillites for their town.

At this location they funded the building of the swimming pool - one of the best in the area - it has two old advantage and two new ones.

First - the pool is warm

Second - Dawn runs a great Café with good food and drink

Third - the pool now has a great spash zone.

Lastly - they have a fantastic playground outside that caters for all ages.

The only down side that I'm aware of is that the water is chlorinated resulting in sore eyes if pee gets into the water - Ulverston is better though a bit colder and more suited for those who take their swimming seriously.

Here's a quick view of the new playground:

A Park to aspire to

Dave has alerted us to what is happening at Park View in Lytham St Annes just south of Blackpool.

"We have proved that if people work together for the good of the community, then anything is possible. We have created a safe environment not only for young people but for the whole family to enjoy. We now  have the first 3G park in the country. But we believe that we haven’t just built a park we are building a new community, we now have children from all backgrounds playing together, children who previously didn’t know each other. The park is the one place in the community where there are no social barriers."

This is just what I love to see happening. I've seen samll parks all over Paris that operate in this kind of way.

Parks provide a place for people to  be rejuvenated and get to know each other.

A place where this kind of park could be developed would be Lightburn. But is anyone interested?

With the present politicians we have I can't see this kind of thing happening. As described before Cllr Colin Hodgson actively prevents improvements to Mill Dam Park.

Will the politicians on Croftlands help them get the kind of park that they want?

Or is this going to be a botched opportunity?

Lytham, here I come to find out how they did it. Anyone feel inspired enough to join me. Thanks to Dave (below) the content of their web site is now viewable , the cached material is perhaps not needed

We could start with Mill Dam and go from there. It will all depend on the involvement of local people.

Thanks again Dave for this brilliant piece of information, without you we wouldn't know about this project. This is an example of what this blog and the internet is all about.

The Greenhouse is now fully functional!

Erected ten days ago, it's already got 60 pansies getting ready for planting out in a public place near you!(These survived the winter in the cold frame).

Now freshly sown seeds donated by Chiltern Seeds are already poking through after a week

These are blue and white Salvias - sixty of them.

In total there are well over 1000 plants packet into egg trays that should be ready in a months time.

Flowers come in a wide variety of colours sizes and shapes.

We'll soon have 70 odd sweet pea plants. These will be used to cover the right hand fence of Mill Dam Playground. The more people pick the more will flower!

Here's some I grew earlier:

In 2008.

The hard work starts this Sunday morning at 7 am when I start battling with large stones and tree roots in order to dig down a few feet to get loads of compost down deep where the sweet peas will like it.

I'll be there - in Mill Dam - from 7-9 and 10:15 till 12:30 this Sunday 28th and again 10:15 till 12:30 the following Sunday April 4th.

Come with a fork or prepared to stand and watch in amazement what a 75 year old ( now, no longer 74 !) can do.

Lightburn Park - we're heading your way!

Soon (within a fortnight) we'll be filling in the puddles on the equipment area.

Then it will be cultivating the small round bed at the town centre entrance to the park - Chiltern Seeds are supplying some of their seeds free. Starting small but doing something!

Then it will be ceramics on the fence - probably on the railing around the rail track. Moving wheels and gears to start then engineering things - any ideas? A working model of a piston maybe.

We've also requested seating so that people can interact with the skateboarders as they watch.

Cllr Norman Bishop-Rowe and Richard Forster SLDC officer informed.
