Broadband speeds in Ulverston

I use Google alerts which flags up every reference to the word "Ulverton" on the internet most of waht I get is on the Evening Mail site but occasionally something a bit quirky pops up.

Here we have a discussion of Broadband speeds on the TalkTalk discussion forum.

http://talktalkmembers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=74432

The chat is highly technical and beyond me but it implies that these guys have experienced a dramatic drop in broadband speed in connection with the Ulverston exchange.

Over to you if interested.

The lantern procession last night

As ever, this was a wonderful event.

Rather than try to capture it on 'film' I chose to go out and enjoy it to the full. I did this by showing my appreciation of all the positive energy I experienced in every way I could.

I thought the quality of the lanterns was sky high

Thank you to all those that put so much work into  making it all happen.

I have one bit of video I couldn't resist taking but haven't looked at. Should any one want to experience my take on this event then I point them to what is already on the internet. In many cases involving the same people as last night.

For many aspects of the Lantern procession event which were repeated this year, have a look here at what happened in 2007

For video of the procession then see here

Making Pottery in Mill Dam Park

Between 11 am and 4 pm tomorrow, Saturday 27th we'll be in Mill Dam Park with tables and equipment to help you make something out of clay. This will be fired and could be mounted in either Mill Dam Park itself or attached to the railings in Gill Banks.

We've chosen Mill Dam Park rather than Gill Banks  because this provides somewhere for children to play and for people to sit and chat at the picnic tables there.

This event will also provide an opportunity to discuss future activities of the BUGs. Tea will again be available.

In order to deal with any rain we've bought a ten foot square Gazebo that will provide shelter.

We look forward to meeting you.

Coming soon

In less than three week's time.

Fancy joining a time team to dig for history at this historic site.

It could be an exciting week end.

This next week end - Furness Tradition Festival

 8 -10 July 2011

A message from Andy Frame:

2011 Furness Tradition Festival Late News

There will be a pre festival session on Thursday night in the Hope and Anchor on Daltongate, just up from the Market Cross. This is also the venue for Nick's singaround session on Saturday. Starting at 1 pm, this is one of the unsung highlights of the festival. It frequently carries on until the late evening.

We are now on twitter. You can follow us @furnessfolk. While it is still early days, this is where to get the latest news. We also look forward to your tweets on all aspects of the festival.

We have gathered together the cream of Furness' folk musicians to play in our special festival band. They will be playing for you on both Friday and Saturday nights. We think that you will find them to be a really good danceable band.

Looking forward to seeing you at the weekend!

Birkrigg is a must today

If nothing else.

You'll meet a lot of people with a broad smile on their faces.

That's a rare occurence these days.

Make every effort even if you have to drag yourself up by very small movements on your hands and knees.

You'll find someone there to help you down.

What's it all about?

Listen, listen, listen.

Lots of creativity in making sounds from the wind.

Harmonic Fields

If you get the chance go several times in different conditions.

Lots of ideas to spark off other activities . . . .

Ulverston will never be the same.

That's true of course every day of the year with the people who live here.

A Great Discussion Group

The next two sessions:

1st and 15th March 2011

2.15 p.m. – 4.15 p.m.

Methodist Hall, Neville Street,Ulverston.

At the meetings, which are held fortnightly throughout the year, we listen to a short presentation about the topic and then have an open discussion of the arising issues.

Reason

Here are a few questions that will get us thinking about the topic:

·      Do we really use reason to make most decisions?
·      Are reasoned decisions always the best  ones?
·      When the calm voice of reason is drowned out by screaming emotions, how can we make good decisions?
·      Why does one person's valuation of something influences others' perception?
·      Why is our attitude to risk often so unreasoned?
·      Does the excessive use of reason lead to a dehumanisation of everyday life?
·      What are the prospects for the future of our society when reason is so often ignored?

I'm going along with the question: "Are humans really 'reasonable' or are they really emotional beings using reason for support ?"

If you would like to find out more about our meetings please ring Geoff on 01229 480347 or send an email - gd at tygh.co.uk

I find these discussions really helpful as they help me sort my ideas out in a world where there are no 'right' answers

Now we have two great but very different places to enjoy a coffee

Poppies is a great place to feel part of the Ulverston Community and now the Novel Cafe´, on the Market square, provides something completely different and very special.

Several snug places to chat or browse through one of the books, or read the paper.

Not only will you find hundreds of books but art work of every kind to take home with you at reasonable prices.

Then there's computer access - it may be free , I'm not sure. Certainly you can access the internet from you laptop.

Books , books and more . . . .books.

Then there's a children's play area
And an unusual Mural on the top floor.

Taking this home may prove a little difficult.

Maybe a clock to help remind you it's time to return home. To vacate a seat for someone else.

And buy that book you're a quarter way through.

And yes that picture would look good on our wall. All for the the price of a Concert ticket at the Coro and way below that of a seat at Anfield to watch Liverpool once more fail to get that winning goal in.
And it's open till 5:00 pm and on Sunday.

Instead of buying a Sunday paper we've decided to come here to read the writeups in beautiful surroundings.

Swarthmore Hall treat

We were up last weekend to enjoy a fantastic treat of the crocusses - see them in their past glory at the side , here. They have never looked better and their memory continues to inspire.

I wonder if they are still in full bloom - or is it too late?

The new ones at Ford Park have now been followed by a beautiful show of Daffodils.

Some very thoughtful planting last year by the volunteers there.

The Crocusses in the Gill Banks planters are just coming out. The Dark Blue Hyacinths are looking great. At the moment it's safe to venture here as a major clean up of dogshit has been carried out. Dog foulers watch out, the Gill residents are out to catch you and prosecute you !

Their patience is exhausted.
