Why advertise it in the westmoreland i don't buy that paper, alot more ulverston people will buy the mail more so why not put it in there.I've been on the mail site when they did a web chat and it's a complete waste of time, they'll just say it's down to the lack of funding

I went to this meeting last night.

At 7.00pm in the Coro Entrance there was no sign of a meeting.

I persevered upstairs and found a horseshoe of tables with important looking people sat round.

The whole meeting was an echo of the Neighbourhood Forum where those in the know go through the motions of "communicating with the public".

First , little effort is made of engaging with the public, so what actually happens is that a few people "in the know" are those that express their views. These people often aren't really in touch with their communities but they are power seeking people who which to be "in the mix" and have their biased views heard.

Secondly, when I tried to determine more clearly how the Street Watch scheme worked after a glossy presentation with lots of omissions, the chair tried to deflect the question to after the meeting so that "the business of the meeting" could proceed.

Fortunately other peoplely officers saw the genuine nature of my inquiry and an informative exchange followed.

The tone of the meeting was to skate over all issues and project an impression that all was well and - leave it to us.

After trying to reassure us with the feeling that crime was totally under control in Cumbria and nothing to worry about, the Police Chief made the frank admission that we were sitting on a time bomb.

It is sad that the public aren't alerted to future problems. Instead we could be involved now, rather than go through the motions which is what this meeting felt like.

The time bomb referred to was from the consumption of alcohol by the young - something that is flaring up here in Ulverston in connection with the Roxy (echoing happenings all over the country - see next posting!
