Tom Henderson, I assume you are disabled!
In response to a letter to the Eve Mail on the subject of the Pedestrianisation of Market Street when Tom Henderson of Church Walk, Ulverston had written:
"Car is useful for so many reasons"
"Whoever thought it was a good idea to stop traffic going down Market Street?Having a pie at lunch.dropping off a DVD, stopping for a pint,and booking a holiday are all things I have done in Market street under the power of a vehicle.
Closing Market Street would be a bad move for the whole town."
Being disabled must be the only reason that you openly break the law by stopping repeatedly on double yellow lines as you travel down Market Steet, Ulverston.
You live within two minutes of the town centre and yet use a car.
Assuming that you suffer from disability, why are you not parking in the Weint which gives ready access to all your favourite haunts.
The car is becoming a menace to Ulverston's streets with the worse case being that of boy racers that travel at speed with the screech of tyres. We all need to speak out about this behaviour and provide more challenging activities for those with a surge of adrenaline.
Join me as I seek to encourage the Town Council to get the County to take care of our cobbles and provide a skateboard park for our responsible youngsters who have learnt that hard practice at physical skills leads to high self esteem and improved exam results. Speaking in the Council Chamber is hair raising stuff for the most hardened adventurer!
Tom, how about a bit of action after watching your DVD, eating your pie downed by a pint of Hartley's best and that holiday booked in Majorca. Perhaps you drive a Mini and can scale the Council steps Italian style - but will those conservative (small 'c') councillors allow your Mini in their Chamber. Shame, you'll actually have to use those two pins of yours.
Here's to all health-giving activity even if it's mainly done when you press the accelerator and brake pedals.

Geoff i drive a motorbike and i am not disabled, not really sure why the evening mail put that i have a car.

Leave Market Street alone! There are too many restrictions already on motorists in Ulverston. That's why I don't spend any of my money in the town, on principle.
That's because the Town was for the most part built for the horse and cart.
We need to move on to the 21st century and the 10mph zone described above is ideal for our present day life style.
It sounds as though your principles will lead you to a ghost town with nothing to do but watch tele and spend your time in could-care-less shop assistants in Barrow - of which there are quite a few.
If you want real service go to Millom!
Rubbish! Councillors and Council Officers - who'd have them! They just can't stop meddling. Leave off won't you! If I had my way there'd be a big reduction in the yellow slug trail, and free parking in the streets and car parks. No wonder Ulverston is like a ghost town. All towns were built for horse and cart. Get yourself over to some of the North Yorkshire towns such as Yarm and Stokesley to see how free parking and few restrictions can really help a place.

It's another no brainer. It's such a poor incentive to spend moneyin the town when it costs so much to park. There is a well know supermarket chain in the region that offers free parking.
Surely there is not something more shady involved - alas I have a suspicious mind.

As for anonymous 3 could he come up with some actual proposals that we could take seriously?
Let's find out what the town would be like if we follow his/her advice. Surely the traffic warden isn't there all the time. We could then learn what chaos feels like!
Ok, this is anonymous 2/3. Take a critical look at all the double yellow lines in and around the town centre. Ask yourself in each case, is this restriction REALLY necessary? In many cases it won't be. Sorry I can't give you any concrete examples because I don't live in Ulverston and am not familiar with the present situation. Suffice it to say, last time I visited I noted many examples of unnecessary restrictions. As for the car park charges - where does the money go, I wonder? If there were no charges the money would almost certainly be spent in the shops anyway, so it would remain in the town rather than being spirited away by wasteful SLDC. A town like Ulverston simply cannot sustain parking charges. The evidence is there for all to see. How busy is Booth's compared to the Town Centre? I know SDLC would bleat on about lost revenue, but I ask you, could you not go through their budget like a dose of salts and remove millions of pounds of unwarranted expenditure; I'm sure I could. As for your 10 mph limit in Market Street - make it 20, but for pete's sake don't impose yet more obtrusive signs on the town centre.
