Good news for the Honeypot?

What would be a good games area for the Honeypot ?

Wendy Kolbe is bringing Margaret Belk,Community Development Officer, SLDC, to a meeting at Dale Street School:

This Wednesday 22nd October at 7 o'clock.

The spending of some £50,000 plus to involve children and young people is being discussed.

A MUGA has been proposed which looks like this:

To me this is a real disappointment. The money could be spent much better.

There is already a grassed area with fencing around it for kids to kick a ball around - is it used?

It is very rare to be offered money. we need to think carefully before acting.

Instead of proposing a solution, wouldn't it be better to consult the local young people as to what they want?

There is quite a lot of interest amongst young people from the Honeypot in skateboarding and how about something for young children, furthermore the presence of parents and adults can have a real influence and bring people together.

What is needed is an area where lots of people with different interests get together.

They do this in France very successfully.

So how about:

Seating in a small park area:

Something for the young people:

This is one they've got in Grange.

with Skateboarding:
This is in London and doesn't have to cost a lot - what is needed is a flat smooth surface of concrete with a few concrete 'boxes' of different heights for the kids to 'Grind' on!

Come to the meeting, particularly if you're young, and express your views!

I've always wondered why they call this place the "Honeypot"

I wouldn't write off MUGA's they're very popular.

I would recommend anyone interested in putting together a good set of play facilities for all ages pay a visit to the Park View play area in Lytham.

The community in Lytham started a few years ago raising money for new play equipment, currently they have:-

MUGA
Skate ramps
BMX Track
Pre-school play area
Primary/Secondary age play area
Adult play area (and yes adult do really use it)
pinic areas
cycle paths
woodlands
football pitches
linked to CCTV
and a regular route for local bobby

My workplace over looks it and I've never seen so many kids and families using these kind of facilities and in all weathers

Having now talked to many parents in this area, many tell me:

1. They feel the money for the MUGA could be spent more imaginatively. There are already ball areas next to Rascals which don't get used very often.

2. There is a lot of interest in scateboarding and simple equipment is inexpensive and 'indestructible'.

3. Young boys seek excitement and danger and skateboarding supplies this. Hangers on who would otherwise be causing trouble, get involved with trying to skateboard as well.

4.In Barrow they have found that behaviour is improving because of skateboarding.

5.It would be good to have an area with as many different activities to suit toddlers, children, teenagers, young parents, grandparents. In fact people of all age groups. It would be good to have a place for older people to gather, chat, and watch the activities of the youngsters.

my question to Luke is:

If you were only spending £60,000 - Would you spend it all on a MUGA or would you have other things when there is already grass with netting round it in place?
