Why is everything so quiet here?

I'm immersed with preparations to take over the running of Flag Fortnight.

In order to take over all the assets - flags poles etc - from the group that want to pass it on, I need to form a group of people who are answerable to a constitution.

I have now a commitment from a small group that are going to take full reponsibility for the Flag Festival and am working on the final details of a suitable constitutuion.

We shall be ready for the handover by formal agreement on Thursday 20th January.

Then will follow the handover of the flags and all related equipment.

At this moment we are active in making contact with a large number of people who want to support this project, one that I have been enthusiastic about and have already worked on for several years.

We are in touch with John Fox and Sue Gill who initiated this festival when they led Welfare State some twenty years ago.

This Sunday we are having our first Flag making workshop led by the people who were involved with flag making in the very beginning.

We are all very optimistic of doing a good job and welcome anyone who would like to get involved or support us in anyway.

Messages of goodwill made here will be passed on to those who stand up and 'do' but who avoid computers like a plague !

And I think it's fantastic what you're doing for Ulverston , having a friendly pub like the King's Head with an attractive and outgoing woman like you, Megan, as Bar Maid.

If you're looking for some interesting conversation - drop in and meet some great people.

I am not attractive !
But I would like to commend your efforts.
I hope you recieve the support you deserve from Ulverstonians with lots of offers of help. The show you did for halloween was pure magic.
Events do need hard work and to have 1000 lights/ fire pots must have kept you and your team very busy.
Here comes the sun.

The Christmas travel plans of thousands of are in disarray after snow left Heathrow Airport all but shut. Thousands have been forced to sleep overnight in airports and there is disruption to road and rail travel with the Met Office warning of more snow ...

Now this will be interesting....

In my book " I am not attractive" is a nonesense statment.

Other people are the only ones able to comment.

If you are the person I think you are I stick by my comment.

Glad that you enjoyed the Halloween and yes we all worked hard for the event to make it come true. We thought it was worth it and were pleased with the result, especially that you and others like you found it 'magical'.

Thanks for your off of help. Being a venue for likeminded people is a very important part of the whole.

It will be in gatherings like those at your pub that new energy will develop. Ideas will get kicked around.

The difference will be that someone says "Right let's do it. Why not? Let's give it a go" and others will say "Yes - and I'm with you."

Many many bold projects have started as an idea amongst people who are sitting chating. Sometimes the idea really appeals and a commitment - a small one - is made.

Well done the volunteers. Lovely that those who can, are prepared to do!

How did the formal handover of the flag festival equipment go? You said it was happening on the 20th January, are you all properly set up, constituted and raring to create a flag based tourist attraction?

We're still waiting.

What was said above is that we would be ready for handover and we were.

However we have been held up by the Ulverston Better Towns Team headed by Jayne Kendal, assisted by Peter Winston, Judy Pickthall and Jean Povey

They requested us to move quickly and we did. However they cannot move as quickly as they indicated in their letter to us, received on Jan 7th, when they wrote:

"We believe that it should take a week to ten days to call your new committee together . . .and enable us to complete formalities."

They now see several problems on their part and we are still waiting.

One gets the impression that the UBTT imagine themselves as calling the shots when in fact our cooperation is crucial and we have our own agenda.

For us speed is essential as several of us have other commitments that start to increase in February.

Our view is we will run a successful festival if only in The Gill. What happens elsewhere in the town depends on us working through all the jobs and learning, once the preject is handed over.

We are optimistic of a quick resolution so that the transfer is complete and we hope to receive a lot of the technical knowhow in running the festival that the UBTT have.

However we are still waiting for a completion date from UBTT.

Patience is the order of the day.
