Young people first

For a change.

What is the hold up with the facilities for young people?

Two things have been promised:

  • A Skateboarding Park in Lightburn Park.

  • A Multiple Use Games Area for Croftlands Playing Field

Neither are happening.

Two months ago the foundation for the Skateboarding Park was promised to start "in three weeks time". Still nothing.

Last September the MUGA for Croftlands was promised for the Spring.

So what is happening Councillor Norman Bishop-Rowe. This is your patch.

Are the promised funds in SLDC being diverted elsewhere?

Young people because they are less able to express themselves in a rational persuasive manner often fail to get things done for them. Yet we are all to quick to jump on them when they misbehave .

Is it the adults that are misbehaving here?

"Take you skateboards somewhere else"
is often the cry.

"Where" they reply.

"Anywhere but here" is the answer.

Who's being childish?

Do we want to raise responsible young adults with initiative?

On croftlands park there use to be a football pitch and even changing rooms, wouldn't this bit on land be better used if they changed it back. How much would it cost for the council to build some changing rooms again and then the kids can hold football matches on there. This could also be used for kids to have a knock around on which would then get them out of the house away from consoles and maybe put a fence around the pitch to help keep the dogs from fouling the pitch.I'm sure this fence could be erected by using the probation service, offenders are then putting something back into the town.

A few comments.Then perhaps you'll correct me.

1. The money for a M.U.G.A. has already been committed to by S.L. Housing so this will provide some football facility. As I understand it, the proposed position should not affect the ability to play football on the field, which is occasionally done by the young people from the community centre (who can use the rooms there to change).

2. Erecting a fence that prevents access to dogs could be expensive. There is a need to stop dog fouling in the area, so shouldn't this be the preferred priority? This will happen when the local community start to speak up to those that don't deal with it - no other way. There's no money to get officials to do it.

3. It would be great to get teams of youngsters playing each other but is this likely to happen on this playing field?

The park was once used every week by ulverston rangers which i'm told the council stopped them using due to the state of the changing rooms.Maybe in partnership with the council they could look at bringing this facility back and give these kids a nice place to play football. There's pitches down at glaxso but these are now like ponds wihen it rains, they won't do out with them to stop the problem. If things aren't done soon then these kids will have no sport to play

Regarding the muga on croftlands this is already been vandalized by kids writing there names all over it in black pen.Surely the council/police should be seen around the area,it doesn't take much working out who they are cause they've used there normal names lol

My view on this kind of thing is that in the long run it's far more effective for ordinary people to say something themselves.

Using the police and councillors is a blunt instrument far from likely to cure the problem. . they can be used as a last resort.

Why has vandalism on the pottery on the railings at Gill Banks stopped? - I don't know - but something is happening and it wasn't mentioned to either police or councillors.
