I understand from the Evening Mail that a very negative group calling themselves the Croflands Community Safety Group and led by Pat Appleton are disagreeing strongly with our councillor.
I want him to stick to his guns and have written the following:
Norman,
I think that you are right to support a BMX area on Croftlands.
When I campaigned for county council, I visited every house surrounding the playing field and in the process discussed its use.
I found that 90% of these people had the following views:
1. That young people needed somewhere to do what they found exciting.
This was Skateboarding and BMX riding. This has been demonstrated by the use of the ramp that has been well used by both in Lightburn Park.
The young people demonstrated their interest in skateboarding by using the area in front of the garages at the park side of Central drive.
This is documented on Youtube by a short video I made at the time.
Young people also congregated and became a nuisance with their skateboarding in front, but particularly behind the parade of shops on Central drive.
2. People felt that they needed somewhere nearby for their children to do this , especially those that found Lightburn Park to be a long way to go.
They felt that they wanted there children in the age range 7 to 12 to have somewhere to play that was close to home in case of trouble.
3. They were aware of a very negative group of adults calling themselves The Croftlands Community Safety Association which I understand you know well from your visits to their meetings.
This group who live on the edges of the field, led by Pat Appleton are fearful of young people as a whole. They have had some bad experiences with youngsters attracted from Barrow to the Croftlands Community Centre and assume that all youngsters are the same. They tend to be people with no experience of children at first hand.
4. Those that have got to know the boys that practice skateboarding and BMX riding find them, on the whole, to be responsible young people. It is true that on the fringes as in Barrow skateboarding can attract louts who want to make trouble - they don't get involved other than to torment those working hard to develop their sporting skills.
I have checked with parents and teachers; they find that skateboarders generally work hard at school and do well. Skateboarding like any skill that requires perseverance develops determination and patience, character traits to be encouraged . Not surprisingly exam results benefit as a result.
Thus I support you wholeheartedly in wanting to provide a facility for young people that we will encourage fun , adventure, risk taking and perseverance.
This are the qualities we want in our youth who will grow to be the leaders of the future.
Leaders we badly need in these difficult times.

I agree,
This is a pure case of NIMBY.
The same fears were expressed at Lightburne park and what a shame no trouble at all.
This may sound extreme but the only place where these miserable lot will find peace is down the hole in the grave. They have a problem with their thinking sad bunch.
I have to agree with what you say in every respect. However, I don't live there. What support do those people living there get if youngsters come along and abuse the facility?
Elderly people are especially vulnerable.
Very little trouble caused by Lightburn skatepark. Very obvious that it benefits a large group of direct users. I'm sure it sets a good example to the younger kids using the playpark to see older kids being industrious on the skatepark. Elderly people (or anyone) can call the cops on trouble makers, and in the process help make the area safer for the decent youngsters who just want to get on with their own life. If the cops don't deal with a problem effectivly, well, that's hardly the skaters fault is it?
Regarding cops and troublemakers, I believe the mere presence of adults has a very calming effect. They should be encouraged. I've tried to get Jayne Kendall to part with some 'town'/Glaxo benches to put alongside the Skateboarding ramp in Lightburn to no avail.
We oldies like to sit and watch the young ones performing their tricks and giving the occasional cheer.
I'll reminder her now ( and copy in Phil Lister who lives across the road) and see what response I get:
To Jayne Kendall , Phil Lister
"What happened to my suggestion re Glaxo benches ?
Jayne,
You may remember that you said that they were being painted earlier last year.
It surely makes a lot of sense to provide a couple alongside the skateboarding ramp in Lightburn Park for adults to sit and admire the youngsters performing their tricks.
Is this idea still in the pipeline?
Geoff
See the discussion on my blog : http://geoffdellow.blogspot.com/2011/03/i-support-norman-bishop-rowe.html where I mention this email to you and Phil"
Lytham has a park that is a fine excellent of what the community can do to fund/build a park all can use - skate park, bmx track, MUGA, play equipment for toddlers, pre-teens, teens, adults. Regularly attended by families, has CCTV, on the community police beat.

Now this is really something.
Thanks Dave.
This is right up my street and something I would love to do (will do!) in Ulverston. See separate posting.
Who designed this park by the way,the council asked what size the football pitch needs to be and were told the size.Yet they still managed to place the muga in the wrong place which then means the football pitch is no good to anyone do to the size. They put new goal posts in but there no good to anyone as the pitch can't be used for football games. So why don't they donate the new goal posts to Ulverston Rangers at least these would be put to some use instead of been plonked in the middle of a field where kids can swing off them.
I'm shocked to read that there will no longer be a football pitch.
There was supposed to be good consultation between the SLDC and Croftlands and I have correpondence with their officers who I found to be very evasive.
I have no confidence in the Cllrs dealing with this. They like to impress the public but how much back bone have they got to help the community achieve what they want.
I looking forward to a reply from Norman B-R to indicate his position.
Who's betting we just get silence?
Jayne Kendall, true to form has replied immediately:
David
you may wish to repond to this one
thank you

My what a grand title!
I wish our Cllrs were so prompt.
Where can i find these plans ect for the park, looked online and can't seem to locate them surely planning permission must have been applied for
By the time she has giving her title it will be finishing time if she starts it after nine o'clock !
The park has now finished and looks good, during the nice weather and schools off on holidays the park is very busy. This will also help the shops nearby due to the fact they will be using these shops. My main concern is parking around the park and you may want to check on this yourself, cars are parking on central drive on both sides of the road. This road is the main bus route and when cars are parked its a struggle to go along that road.I think we really need to look at yellow lines along this road now and maybe speed bumps. With the cars parking right along this road children are having to cross over the road between parked cars which is dangerous.I think it's only a matter of time before someone is run over on central drive.
Thanks for alerting us to this situation.
I'll let Norman know and perhaps he'll take some action on board and even leave a comment here.
My experience of him is that he is one of the councillors that follows things up.
