The Market this last Saturday was disappointing

In contrast to Thursday when the full space of the square was available, Saturday saw four traders leaving their vans in the square causing an untidy mess which can't have impressed visitors and shoppers.

One problem was that access from private cars was not being prevented from New Market Street so vans were left to block this but this was an excuse - one van in New Market Street would have done the job.

It's disappointing that the actions of traders themselves is leading to the market becoming less attractive. They seem to delight in shooting themselves in the foot - a point supported by the long term traders like David and the plant stall who thought more should have been done by Anne, the market supervisor.

I heard a rumour over the weekend that Morrison's were looking at opening a supermarket here in Ulverston. It might be timely for the marketeers and some of the other shop owners to get their act together. I literally wept when I saw the Tesco abomination rape the heart of our lovely and very traditional market town. Geoff, if the rumours are true, thousands will look to you to spearhead the campaign to stop any more desecration.

Its not another supermarket we need. This town masquerades as a tourist town. So, lets have a great big Holiday Inn to accommodate them all. Theres plenty of sites available. But, can you imagine the howls of protest when/if the planning application goes in? We want tourists, but we won't want to accommodate them. mmmmmmm?
