Encouraginng each other to be assertive is something that is very important to me!
Relying on others can be very frustrating. People using their own initiative can often achieve far more. Self belief is important!
We llive in a town where this already happens so much . It will be natural for us as to do this more and more..
Just so's you don't get carried away by the "success" of this particular load of old bo**ox I am here to let you know that not everybody in this town is as enamoured of the so called flag festival as you seem to think. I have several of the bloody things flying very near me and, in the recent strong winds you will be thrilled to know they've kept me awake. My particular circle of friends totally fail to see the point and wonder why amateurish looking bits of cloth wound around sticks is seen as somehow enhancing the town. When we consider "why" we conclude that its there to keep a load of pseudo intellectual, pretentious gits busy for a while. i suppose its more fun than filming cobbles and inspecting car parks but God I wish it'd stop.
I agree that you may have got good reason to criticise.
Please remember that the older commercial town flags - as distinguished from the newer community flags in the Gill - are run by the Ulverston Better Towns Team which as far as I can determine have the following members:
Ralph Spours, Chairman
Peter Winston, Secretary
Cllr Judy Pickthall and Jean Povey
There may be others - it's not easy to get information.
If the people in the town wish to praise or criticise, in this particular case they now know who to direct there comments to.
It's good to hear your views which is one of the main reason I run this blog.
The better town flags have flagged and need maintenance, a review and tender loving care. This should start now with a list of essential tasks. A full year ahead to do this work let the next festival be an improvement. A couple of working WORKING parties not waffling would make a large difference They should handle a wind with minimum maintenance. It is a super event that delights visitors and deserves support. As for you Norman sorry you cant sleep try getting tired instead of tiring
I'd like to know, Norm Jones, what you and your circle of friends contribute to the town that gives you the right to shoot others' efforts down this way? It's very easy to sit around criticising. If you don't like what's being done, then what will you do?
Awfully sorry Geertje, didn't realise we didn't have the right to criticise! Might I suggest that, instead of flying what I still consider to be amateurish bits of cloth that the time and effort be put into planting flowers around the town, possibly in planters, that would, I think, appeal to everybody and brighten the old spot up rather more than the flags.
The only drawback i see is that any tubs/planters would immediately be seen as handy toilets for the less salubrious topers of the parish. That and the old problem - money, I guess.

Our flags in the Gill are not "amateurish bits of cloth".
The same group that makes the flags are responsible for the 1,500 Daffs, Crocusses and Tulips in Mill Dam and over a dozen planters at Gill Banks - also made by us - with violas coming into bloom.
What's more we've supplied two much used picnic tables for the likes of you to sit out and enjoy them.
Now how about helping us put a further 500 plants in Mill Dam Park for everyone to enjoy.
We've prepared them ourselves and waiting for people like you to help plant them.
Please accompany your criticism with action or are you just all 'mouth'.
Obviously, the criticism thing works both ways! Where I live fronts directly onto the street, not being that keen on plain, blank pavements I bought 3 planters and have planted them with various flowers, now looking very colourful. To date they haven't been used as toilets, except by the local cats! So, I've done my bit!
Does it ever occur to you that some people really don't take to "groups", preferring to make a little progress/change by themselves? Every little helps you know.
Watch it, Norm, you're beginning to sound like a positive human after all.
Taking care of your planters is great.
Following your own advice would be an improvement.
You don't have to be in a 'group' to go and plant some seeds, put some plants in a park and water them.
Why not try it?
You may find it does something for the real you deep inside.
Much of what I do is done just for me - for my own satisfaction. If others want to join in - great.
If they don't - fine.
What I won't put up with is people standing on the sidelines and griping and running others down when they don't owe you anything.
Waking up in the night because of noise, is for me a question of attitude to the noise. Snoring from someone you love, trains and chiming clocks can be assimulated so that they don't disturb.
