If I were her, I would not be happy with some people's interpretation of the picture. It has raised some eyebrows from others that saw it.

Great publicity for the new store but is this how we want the office of the Ulverston Mayor and the Town Crier used - and is the parking adequate?

I have already raised the issue of the extensive parking on double yellow lines with the police and emailed the Mayor with the following comment, also posted in the Westmoreland Gazette blog
"Is this appropriate action on our Mayor's part? Especially with the deputy Town Crier, Peter Winston in attendance.
I agree that this store will attract people to the town centre but will this benefit other shops?
This store has no appropriate parking provided and is already leading to a lot of cars obstructing the corner on the double yellow lines of one of the busiest and dangerous crossings in the town.
Will she now turn her attention to ensuring that the safety of the pedestrians here is maintained by bringing to the attention of the store owners that they have a moral responsibility to ensure that their customers behave safely."

Why should the Mayor want her photograph to be removed from this blog?
Is she regretting the association of her official role with alcohol sales and the increased hazard to pedestrians at a dangerous cross-roads?
The message sent me by her actions is that she is tentative about what is good for the town.
The Town Council wants the supermarket and has only just seen how the increased sales of alcohol and volume of traffic in Cross Street might be detrimental to the security of the people it represents.
The reason the Mayor wanted her photograph removed was, it was a photo taken for her on her camera and Mr. Dellow did not have permission to use it.
You cannot go around using photos with out permisson.

Get real Mayor. The photo was in the local paper. What harm does it do to Blog it?

The Photo in the evening mail was a different photo, taken by Milton Haworth. The photo Mr. Dellow used was mine taken from my Westmorland Gazette blog. I may have given him permission to use it if he had asked.

OK Mayor. Shall we agree to disagree on the value of ownership of that or any other photograph?
More importantly have you understood the danger to pedestrians at the junction of Cross Street and New Market Street? Shall I collect photos of situations that have occured?
For example a driver who parks in Cross Street to use the cash machine. This driver parks on double yellow lines and on a junction and then BACKS out across New Market Street narrowly missing an unsuspecting pedestrian. Who is to blame?

The driver is to blame - it's a bit of a no brainer really. The driver was the one breaking the law parking on double yellows.
Solution is simple. Enforce the law. If it's a real problem then get a traffic warden out - the revenue gained from parking fines shall pay for their services.
Don't simply complain to shut something that brings revenue to the town.
Bargain Booze is convenient for many towns people - I like to shop there sometimes in the evening and have never had a problem parking legally. What do you propose? Shutting all the shops on market street so that it's totally safe for pedestrians.

Andrew you're being totally unreasonable and resorting to redicule.
I agree, having been in Bargain Booze that it can provide an excellent service.
My concern is that The Mayor and others are unwilling to do what they can to discourage parking on this dangerous corner.
I have even had one ridiculous cllr tell me that he parks on the double yellow line regularly and this is a good thing because it restricts the entrance to New Market Street so that boy racers slow down.
I have reported this to Dick Base, the Traffic Warden for Ulverston and he avoids taking any action.
Somehow he believes that people are allowed to park on double yellow lines because they are loading or unloading, even though this only a packet of cigarettes or some cash from the cash machine. He refuses to take action and believes a prosecution would fail.
Other Authorities eg in Westminster, have a different interpretation.
The police could technically take action if cars reversed up a one way street - which they do!
Perhaps someone else would like to take this matter up?
