What does 'sorted' mean Cllr Col?

On 26th February Cllr Colin Williams informed us that this sorry sight had been 'sorted' by him.

"Thanks Geoff, for bringing this to my attention.

I have called Graham Wheelhouses' office @ Cumbria County Council but he's out of the office until 3pm today, Thursday.

This is a shoddy repair to say the least, but leave it with me and we'll get it sorted as soon as possible.

cllr Col Williams"

Could we have an update please, as nothing has changed ?

Very nice to see cllr Col Williams is always on the boil

Having received an email today from Cllr Colin, I can only conclude that his definition of 'sorted' is not the same as mine or maybe even the reader's.

It may however be the meaning that many politicians attribute to this word.

It just shows what a waste of space ALL Councilors are to be honest, there not interested in the town all they care about is getting a fat pay out once a month

This last remark illustrates how little anon understands of council work!

There is no 'fat pay out ' at the end of the month.

Almost all councillors contribute something to the running of the town. The problem, as I see it, is that they take on responsibilities and then ignore/avoid them.

That is: they could do a lot more.

Because they are regularly criticised they retreat into their cosy rule bound club of being an 'important person' which you see if you attend a meeting. This reinforces the feeling that they actually achieve something.

However if they could step back a little they might realise that compared to effective businessmen they are a joke.

The sad thing is that there is nothing in the system at present to attract capable people into it. Most sane people want to give politics a wide berth.

If you tell them you are entering the arena, the average person thinks you must be mad . . . .

So these Councilors don't claim expenses??I remember a few years ago a local Councilor wasn't happy when is expenses and other Councilors were published in the local paper and they claimed a fortune back

Town councillors claim very few expensenses as far as I'm aware.

Rare trips to Albert our twinned town in France may qualify but for the most part at little travelling is involved expenses are low.

The accounts for the Town Council are published regularly - check for yourself.

SLDC is slightly different.

Personally I don't grudge them a penny. It's the quality of their work and their lack of perseverance in pursuing policies for Ulverston, I find fault with!

I don't get paid a penny for my work on Ulverston town council Nada Nothing and I have never claimed any expences, in fact I dont think we can. We do it for free, but of course the majority of our constituents believe we get paid, how did this happen, and what do we do to inform them.

Try communicating with them more Colin.

I do the best I can, as you can see above.

Quite honestly it would be an absolute scandal if most of you, Town Councillors, were paid a penny. I'm stilling looking for the first councillor that I can support with any enthusiasm.

My comments above apply.

At times you lot actually stop things happening.

Look at the absence of a good web site for Ulverston, something that you were involved in - all we ended up with a good web site for:

Wait for it:

The Town Councillors.

And look now at the state of our shops.

A decent set of councillors would have made sure that Jayne Kendall produced a good web site for the town but instead we got a disgraceful mess done in Word.

Far from being proactive; people like Colin Hodgson just get themselves on the frontpage of the Mail lamenting the loss to the town of this and that.

Why aren't they trying to get something done now about:

Our Parking problems

The quality of road repairs

Good playing facilities for the kids. Is the skate park it? What about that MUGA promised for Croftlands for this spring. . .

Promoting thriving commerce and sorting out the inertia coming from The King - what's his name - the guy with the walrus mustache.

The situation at the Roxy

Encouraging the real arts in the town - we have a superb sculptor in steel - Chris Brammall. What do we get - something from the last century - Stan and Ollie.

That painter better get cracking on those lampposts - I've got itchy fingers. I can feel a psychadelic mood coming over me.

Admit it there's not much action coming out of the Town Hall at the moment.

Occasionally some good ideas but rarely do they get further.

My God what a rant!

At least occasionally I get something done- as in the case above asphalt - and now United Utilities are doing a good job when working on the cobbles on Market street.

Looking forward to seeing what Judith Pickthall achieves on the Town Market - you Labour Councillors could actually make a name for yourselves - working with SLDC Mark Wilson.

Plenty to go at - remember the Roxy is on your patch - What are you doing about it? Doesn't Counservative Jamie Samson need a kick up the back side - by you?

Personally, I have no problem with these guys expenses.

I do have a problem with people like the knowhere crowd who stand on the sidelines and criticise. Why don't they get stuck in themselves. Let's have some positive action. Get involved with local groups and do something.

As far as policians are concerned, it's how they represent us is the problem.

The pay and the inconvenience of doing a political job attracts many people for the wrong reasons.

If they upped the pay, then we'd get better quality leadership. Everyday people with financial responsibilities, people with business experience, would take it on.

At the same time we would have to make sure that they delivered the goods.

The main problem is that very few of us take an interest in government because we feel we can't influence things anyway.

The whole system needs a shakeup.

I'm concentrating on building up local groups who will want to get involved when the next elections come round in three year's time.

So are you telling me that Halfpenny deserves every single penny of the 20k she claimed. Can you also tell me/show me what she's done for ulverston to deserve this

Geoff Dellow said...

Why not read my comment?

"As far as politicians are concerned, it's how they represent us is the problem."

No I'm not satisfied which is why I spent a lot of my own money and a lot of time running for County Council.

But worse are the people like yourself that sit on the fence and gripe and do nothing.

Did you vote for me?

Did you campaign for ANY candidate at the last election?

Or did you just sit in the pub and moan?

Moaning doesn't change things.

Anonymous said...

I didn't vote for anyone and why should i??.

I only ever see them when there after your votes, never seen them for the rest of the year.

They don't give a dam about anything unless it effects them, then you'll see them campaigning and all over the newspaper.Yet they don't put the same effort in when it doesn't really effect them.

Maybe a new post geoff and let readers discuss about the allowances

Geoff Dellow said...

Your response says it all!

All you want to do is pull others apart.

Try standing up for something and being counted.

There are more important things to talk about than expenses.

Lack of action for instance.
