Flag photos

Here's a good collection on Flickr of photos taken by Daniel Birtwistle

.
It's good to see nearly all the flags fluttering away in the town including those on the main roundabout and finally outside Booths after several people complained to Ralph Spours that nothing was being done.

It worked and they are looking great.

Well done Sue Redhead and her team of intricate Flagmakers - we just stick to the easy ones created en masse.

Here are some taken by Elizabeth Ellis - lovely rich colours:

Hundreds of people take photos and publish them all over the UK - I'm sure it does a great job for putting Ulverston on the UK and maybe the world map in a small way.

What would be good to hear is a Councillor or two saying what a great job is being done.

Sadly this is not their 'style' - maybe we can teach them some manners ?

Is it possible for councillors to praise the work of others more often ?

A daily inspection of all flags is esential to a good display.
One bad potatoe can ruin the sack !
Its such a shame after all the hard work that is put in by volunteers to have a good show let down through lack of maintenance.
I know the ladies are ready with their machines to carry out repairs.
Maintenance,a little tweaking and TLC is not a nice to have it is vital.
A few running repairs before the next blow will save in the end.
Something that looks like its sad and not a flag should be repaired on site or removed.
It is a super event dont let it become a joke.

Maybe I live in a different town but I honestly have not come across any fellow Ulverstonian who feels that the flag "festival" is as great as the organisers (not unexpectedly) think it is. It just seems that its yret another attempt by the arty farty brigade to turn Ulverston into something it isnt, i.e. a haven for creative artists. Self evidently the Lanternhouse closed because the majority here just weren't interested. There is a worrying tendency, particularly amongst newcomers, to want to change the town into some sort of Bohemian Left Bank paradise, maybe enriching their lives but doing nowt for the vast majority here.

Ulverston suffers because the powers that be just cannot decide whether they want it to be a tourist trap along the lines of Stratford or Grasmere or whether it should revert to normality and go all out to attract business, industry and jobs.In my opinion far too much effort is put into the former and woefully little into the latter option.

Had to laugh, bearing in mind tourist/visitor aspirations, over the weekend - I overheard a group of visitors on Monday night who had been unable to find a meal at about 8pm. Kitchens were closed, restaurants closed! In addition, following on from Super Sunday the town resembled nothing more than a rubbish dump! Welcome to Ulverston!

Thanks James for your dinosaur thinking. It's not new.

When do people stop being labelled "Newcomers". I've been here over fifty years, and many other artistic people were born here. Some of the old families in Old Ulverston have got involved with the Flags in the Gill. Besides many of the active people in the town are old offcomers - they now are the town. Can't you accept reality?

Art in all it's forms: music, festivals, design, fashion is a major part of the town's culture.
Since when does Tourism not qualify as an industry?

I too am willing to criticise the extreme "arty farty" which had more to do with relates little to the town people.

What are you doing to encourage new industry?

We've been proposing an idea here: Flag making for music festivals and celebrity weddings across Europe: a valuable niche market.( people are willing to pay £25/flag/event : the materials cost a fiver!) Has anyone taken it up?

The trouble, I believe, is that Ulverston has a lot of moaners who promote nothing: our politicians in the past have been prime examples. Now we've got a new bunch - let's hope they've got a bit more drive than the last lot.

We plan to come to the Parade at Croftlands, in ten day's time to test public reaction to Flags - We'll see whether you are right.

At least we're getting off our backside and venturing out to meet the public.

Did you direct the tourists to The Rose and crown,The Farmers,The mill ,The Stan Laurel,The Lotus, various Indian restraunts.
Did you offer to help, I guess not.
Please pop into Booths for a pamplet and discover your town.
Or do you somewhere else BARROw perhaps?
