Candle holders for Gill Banks

The idea is to make pottery holders that will fit over the spikes of the railings of Gill Banks.

Here are some that have already been made with a blank in front waiting for your design! Come and do this tomorrow, Saturday between 11 am and 4 pm (or in subsequent weeks every Saturday at the Coach House Union Lane - or Gill Banks if the weather is good (which is doubtful ).

We aim to make some 60 to 100 by the end of October ready for Halloween or Guy Fawkes.

We'll be putting candles in jam jars inside the pots!

Your doing some really good things at the moment Geoff.

One contribitor suggested protective caps for the Gill Banks railings/spikes.

About >30< years ago we lived in the Gill (think you & Angella were there), our son got impailled on those railings.

SLDC refused to cut off spiked tops. Les ? used to live opposite Old Friends (was SLDC blacksmith) he spent his week end knocking over tops of spikes.

Thanks for the comment. Some positive remarks are really appreciated.

The incident was perhaps when I lived in the Gill ('83 to '86, no Angela) and a kid got seriously spiked on the Church Hall railings.

We still have the option of cutting off all the spikes but the idea of putting ceramics over the top is a great one.

So we're into making some caps in quantity, some of them are already made - heads of different kinds.

The ones in the photos are intended for candle lights - they may be a little too tempting for people wanting to take 'pot' shots as in target practice!

One other facet to this issue:

When I mentioned what we were doing to a middle age woman, she said she wanted to keep the spikes.

I explained what could happen.

Her response was "Kids should be climbing the railings anyway"

She and the council ignore the law that states that kids are naturally naughty and that we should take care to avoid the possibilities of hazards being present.

For example, farmers can be procecuted for leaving farm machinery in a state that kids could injure themselves. Home owners are liable if kids drown in their swimming pool. At this moment some one in the Gill has a back garden with easy access for a ten year old to the top of his roof. There is no gate or obstruction so that kids have easy access.

It is not a defense to say that kids should not be there.

Those spikes have worried me for ages. I see children using the bank higher up the gill path to run down, slide down or ride down - one way or another. I fear they will speed over the top of the bank and on to the spikes. I hate spiked fences. I doubt if they put off a determined climber. Apart from which, the water is easy to get at so why a spiked fence? Danger lurks all over Gill banks, but I did daft things as a kid. We can at least remove the obvious dangers.

Thanks Gladys. These candle holders won't lessen the hazard as they will only cover on in forty spikes - they're intended tolight up the path all the wayalong the bottom path and back along the top. I reckon we need about 100 but 60 would be good.( by end of October - thoroughly feasible - up to 20 already!

I've moved on to that thought of making holders for candles for the home as presents for Christmas.
Trying to improve my technique so that I can make one in less than half an hour. The blanks , like beakers can be made on ten minutes or less!
