I think he would be a good influence as he, in my view, has principles that he attempts to live up to.
However I question why he is following me on Twitter. That seems to be a gimmick to attract my attention to his campaign.

His president bid messages you're seeing are because you are following him, if you didn't follow him you wouldn't see them.
Usually people will follow back when you follow them, it's a way of increasing the reach. Doesn't mean he reads everything (that would be impossible) but he'll get a snapshot the couple of times a day he checks.
You need to follow more people (seek out local tweeters and follow them), also use http://twitterfeed.com to automatically update your twitter when you've posted a new blog post. Tweet when you've been/going to a local attraction, event, council meeting - over time people will value and forward on your tweets
Keep an eye on people mentioning Ulverston - http://search.twitter.com/search?q=ulverston (Tweetdeck can be used to make watching out for Ulverston tweet easy and for tweeting yourself)
Tweet - tweet! Sounds wonderful. It's enough for me to keep up my blogs and follow a few. I can't even keep up with facebook and yet I know there are links to make things easy.
I know that is how authors sell books. Somehow I can't push myself, or my books, onto people who have become friends. Hence I get my books in the libraries. That's the problem with being late into computing and even later starting blogging. It's all google-googly-gook to me!
