Roxy review

I have now talked to an increasing number of people regarding their experiences of what happens at, and in the nearby streets to, the Roxy in the early hours when they hold an event.

I have forwarded to Gary Robinson my concerns. Yet even after this, it would appear that the behaviour last Saturday night (30th May), Sunday morning, was as bad as ever.

If anyone else would like to share their views here or privately by email, they are welcome. I would especially like to hear from you if they are ready to make a signed statement.

What has happened is that the disorder on the streets has moved from The Sun to the Roxy. I have never heard anyone ,such as yourself ,campaign against The Sun in the way you are campaigning against The Roxy.
If there is a big problem it is up to the police to deal with it and ,if necessary ,object to the licence when it is up for renewal.

Thanks for that.

I am responding to concerns expressed by residents in town.

These are expressed as I go from door to door as I do. I am not seeking them out like a witch hunt!

I have received no complaints recently about the Sun though these figured in interviews six months ago but more in connection with what happened in the past and not what was happening then.

Do the Neville St Runners have a comment to make ?

Are you some sort of copper now, wanting signed statements from people

The problems are far worse than The Sun as they have no off the street smoking area. It should have never got a licence.

The bouncers at The Sun never let you take drinks on the street unlike the ones at The Roxy.

If The Roxy is an arts centre then so is The Sun. These is nothing artistic about chart music and chavs battering each other!

Its not an 'arts centre'. That was just a ruse.

Its a boozer. Simple as that.

Welcome to The Sun Hotel Arts centre we have artistic beer and artistic looking fruit machines you may also want to try your hand at a game of ya olde artistic darts. Sounds stupid but that is what Robinson did to get the council round to his idea.

Can someone defy the meaning of arts centre?

What "experiences" have this "icreasing number of people" had Geoff? What are the facts? Did you, personally, have an "experience".Have you canvassed the many "young people who join together" in the Roxy what they think if you closed it down?. The Sun is quiet because it's empty, they've all buggered off to the Roxy!!

Facts are an elusive experience.

I'm meeting people who are very sympathetic to having a good time.

They at the same time would like to have their "good time" which may involve sleeping at night ie between say 11 PM and 7 am.

We all try to be considerate of other people as we comply with our establishing rules that have been made for the purpose of "getting along with each other".

At times people forget this and we try to haul them back across the boundary marked "acceptable behaviour".

There are times when the majority come to agree that this boundary has been well and truly crossed.

Perfectly reasonable people can change dramatically when they've drunk too much. They start to behave like children and need us to intervene for all of our sakes.

These people who are sympathetic to having a good time - would they be the ones who think the Two Ronnies are funny ,go to early bird dinners and are back < indoors > as they call it ,in time for Emmerdale. Yes I thought so. Tucked up in bed by 11 pm. I have neighbours like this and they get up at 6am in summer and clatter about and clip hedges and shout good morning to each other in the street. They put their bins out at 5pm the day before collection - for them the day is over.

How often does the Canteen stay open until 3am?

I think Gary needs to quickly address his business plan with regard to its location and consideration to his neighbours.

I think it is a big mistake for him to operate as a nightclub opposite a residential care home, and within 50m of many residential dwellings- certainly not like The Sun and i dont think any comparisons between the venues can therefore be drawn.

Comparisons should only be drawn to the Roxys neighbour - The Coronation Hall. I think he should run it like the live events at the Coronation Hall which pass without incident and the venue close at 12.
I love live music; im off to see Oasis at the Weekend and will be attending some of Garys gigs in the near future.
However, the nightclub element of his business is just not appropriate in this location.

Thank you for this column. Can i add that Gary has alienated a lot of his nieghbours because he misled them and misled the councelors: It is most certainly not a media and arts centre, or anything in this vein is ancilliary to the primary nightclub function.

OK then, lets close it down. Show Mr Robinson that Ulverston is far too small in size and mind to accept another venue for (mainly) young people. The L&H Museum will be out on the street I guess. Hope the Council can find a new Carpet Wholesaler to occupy it, or maybe a Bankrupt Stock enterprise, and they can pile their goods high on the pavement, for the old dears to sort through, and we can all have a bloody good moan again ..whoopeeeee!

I agree it is not a media/arts centre but these events need to be subsidised by the nightclub side. Perhaps Gary has misled people to get his licence but he won't be the first or last to do that.It is naive in the extreme to expect people to go home quietly from a club but this behaviour is not exclusive to clubbers. Have you ever been outside the Coot when functions end ? The noise is deafening and this from the same type of people who tut tut at the scenes outside the Roxy or Sun.

I think that the Roxy is serving a well needed purpose. I'm sure one day I'll be too old and less interested in party all night. However it is exactly what young people want to do - and they'll do it regardless of the venue. You can't hold individual licence holders responsible for the actions of a public, it's simply passing the buck. Police deal with law-breakers and SLDC demand a large annual fee from licensees together with huge business rates to contribute toward that police help. I encourage the arts side of the roxy but acknowledge that art needs financial subsidy and the responsible club side provides that well.

sorry to repeat my question but can i ask if anyone knows how often The Canteen is open until 3am? Is it as regularly as the Roxy?or does Gary restrict its opening hours or is it Barrow Council that restricts it?

To find out details of the Canteen and the Roxy program, the details are on the Internet using Google.

If we do have a problem perhaps we can have top a reason to open our local police station after hours
When burglars and thugs practice their arts
As they say "its an ill wind"
