Buy that sledge - you'll be using it next year.

Due to Global warming, scientists predict that we're in for very cold weather in the winter for years to come.

Sounds contradictory - it's not - so be prepared for next year.

Here Steve Connor explains it all

It's all to do with the rapid melting of the ice in the Arctic which causes the sea water to be cooled because it no longer has ice to protect it.

This leads to changes in the wind direction bringing ice cold north wind down to the British Isles from the Arctic.

The graphs in the printed paper are very persuasive.

When will the public start to believe that this is the disaster we had better be aware of.

The economic crisis will be like a kitten's 'wap' that one barely notices as compared with the swipe coming from a Massive Polar Bear that sends us reeling several yards.

Enough to give you screaming nightmares.

And so it should.

Ulverstonians take note and prepare.

Time to toughen up.

This will be a crisis to end all crises .

Worse still; energy supplies are due to be very unreliable by 2015.

If ever communities need to work together - it's now.

Hopefully we will return to a time like the last war when we took care of each other and the stiff upper lip was evident.

The trouble now is that the enemy is not obvious and is not easily identified. We will see it develop from within.

In the war time , it was clear to everyone who the enemy was. We then worked together to fight back.

Now it is very unclear and what is beginning to happen may well get worse.

People in our midst will take advantage of others. Thieving could increase. The privileged could take care of themselves leaving others to cope as best they can.

The future could lead to us having real friendships where these are based on trust and working together - it could be a time of enjoyment as we help each other cope.

That's right Geoff Cheer us all up why don't you

Doesn't facing up to a likely future help us to enjoy the present more?

After all we know we're going to die, but does that stop us enjoying tomorrow?

Kidding ourselves that everything in the garden is lovely and then finding that in reality it's not, is far more of a downer, don't you think?

Getting our priorities sorted out could be far more constructive.

Recent past we've had wet winters, media puts it down to global warming.

In the summer we had a hosepipe ban, media put it down to global warming.

Now in a cold snap the media put it down to global warming.

The media don't bother researching a story, all they need is one source, they have 50/50 chance of being right but they don't care anyway as long as it fills a page.

Whether it's true or not, certainly for the weather affecting the UK there isn't enough data to prove/disprove that it's down to global warming.

Take a look at this page to see how ridiculous the media get :- What you can get cancer from

This kind of comment, Dave, is so misleading.

Have you read the article by Steve Connor ?

Why are you referring to 'The Media' ? What's that got to do with it? Have you found that this reporter is falsifying his sources - he gives the references so you can check this out.

Of course some of, maybe a lot of,'the media' get it wrong - these are just trying to appeal to the public that lap up a sensational story. The Guardian runs a regular columd on 'bad science'.

Now consider who is writing this story and in which paper. Is this a reporter and paper that can be trusted ?

Does the reporter quote his sources precisely so that you can go and check out the facts he is basing his story on.

When wanting explanations one has got to go to the people you have most respect for.

This is where most people are very lazy - they want to be told rather than making their own minds up and sticking to the information they find.

Does the explanation given make sense based on the science you already know?

Do other scientists whom you respect also agree with the theories being proposed?

In this case these predictions are not attempting to explain what happened after the event which is far easier to do.

Here the scientists were predicting what would happen in the future at the time of writing, giving reliable data to support their conclusions ie :

"The study was carried out in 2009, before last year's harsh winter started to bite, and is all the more prescient because of its prediction that cold, snowy winters will be about three times more frequent in the coming years compared to previous decades."

They have been found to be correct in two out of two of the years following the prediction.

It is sad that people who have not gone into this matter in any depth denigrate the findings of people who have devoted much time to study the facts.

On this blog I have regularly dealt with global warming and I understand one small part of the picture reasonably well - the part that propane clathrates play in accelerating the trapping of heat in the earth's atmosphere- just click the global warming label to read them.

People refuse to look at some basic facts and seek for themselves possible explanations.

Is it not a fact that a lot of the ice in the Artic has melted. Something that continues to happen year by year at what scientists consider to be an alarming rate.

Those wishing to join in the debate about Global Warming need to seek out an scientific explanation that satisfies them at to why this is happening.

If they don't know, then they should not confuse others when reliable people are giving us explanations which are supported by the majority of the scientific community.

So find someone you trust and find out what they believe.

For me James Lovelock is someone I trust.

I also trust the scientific editor of the Independent.

Show me some articles where he has got it wrong and I'm prepared to change my mind.

The fact of the matter about global warming is that it's going to happen and there's nothing we can do about it so we just have to get used to it.
