Jack recommends what could be called - Japanese Crampons.
He's actually made some of these out of polypropylene rope:
"They are very efficient and simple. All the neighbours are using them. An idea that could save a few bruises."
Jack points us to this article which tells of people hiking in the Japanese mountains and meeting a party of seventy year old women walking with ease across what they considered to be dangerous ice - interesting story with good photos.

Great idea, thanks for posting this Geoff. I'd been considering buying some clip-on crampons for my boots but I think I'll try this instead - not only will it be cheaper, ropes won't damage flooring when you're not on snow or ice - would be a pai to have to take the crampons off when you nip into someone's house or a shop.
