Flag making back on track (with other possibilities)

Ulverston is very fortunate indeed.

Two of the original team who made the flags for Flag Fortnight at Sir John Barrow school are back making flags.

All their skill and experience will be passed on to those interested.

Sadly no flags have been made of a while - no one turned up at an earlier workshop.

A new workshop is planned in the week following January 15th and a project to decorate every house in The Gill is proposed.

The team have the know-how, the materials and equipment and welcome anyone who wants to get involved.

Can you visualise an area of town that would enjoy a set of flags?

How about Central Drive Croftlands? How about South Ulverston?

A Facebook group has been set up for communication.

An exciting (for me) side product of this group could be the making of kites - I'm mad about Kites - one of my past keen interests. I too have some materials and expertise in making these.

Could we combine Flags and Kites and other things that go flap and whoosh in the wind?

How about flute like musical 'things' that blow notes in the wind - I'm sure they must exist. They could go on 'The Railings'.

And then there are things that go clang . . . .

And can the beck be made to gurgle at particular frequencies.

Could it be that we'll have a celebration of the earth's natural forces ?

With a bit of solar power thrown in for good measure?

Nice flags but is it really an Ulverston tradition?

Does it matter?

And when does a tradition become established?

Is having a Christmas tree a tradition?

How old is it?

Is it all crying WOLF regarding festivals?
The town is blessed by a wolf crier in the shape of the town crier.
Has your offer been snaped up?

I'm not aware of any wolves around.

No my offer hasn't been accepted by Jane Kendall who doesn't want to give an answer until February at the earliest - well after my deadline for getting prepared - I have no idea what will happen.

We have however formed the Flag Fortnight Group who will run a their own Flag Festival whatever happens using flags that are in the process of being designed and made for people without flags at present.

There's a fair bit of enthusiasm from people with sewing skills and two making workshops are already planned (the first is in a fortnight on Jan 16th) when those that have made flags in the past will be sharing their expertise, equipment and providing the materials for new flags.

We reckon that we can make ten flags per workshop so the target is about forty new flags at least before May 1st.

Finance is already in place for this.

There's also a group some ten men wanting to take on the putting up and taking down of the flags, however there is concern amongst the makers of the past flags that the existing flags need to be checked over for much needed repair and laundering so this needs to start ASAP.

The activity is at present centred on The Gill and other areas of the town are showing interest.

There is a lot of support for the idea amongst non shopkeepers so if you think this would be enjoyable activity for your area of town let us know.

These activities will be publicised more widely very shortly.

A page on Facebook has been created "Flag Fortnight Ulverston".

Thanks for asking.

Town Lands trust may want to contribute they have done in the past as have the town council.
What is the closing balance of the failing organisation?
A fresh broom and competition can be a healthy input
